8 Steps to Understanding The International Adoption Process

International adoption is a life-changing journey that brings families and children together from different corners of the world. For those seeking to embark on this remarkable path, understanding the process and requirements is crucial. In this blog post, we will explore the fundamental steps involved in international adoption and shed light on the essential prerequisites to make this dream a reality.

Step 1: Attend an international information meeting!

Attending an international information meeting is a great way to gain insight, knowledge, and a deeper level understanding of Barker’s programs, the international adoption process, and our home study services! Visit our calendar to register for our next informational meeting.

Step 2: Research and Choose a Country: While this step can be overwhelming, Barker’s team of professionals are available to help families narrow down their options and choose the best country suitable for them.

One of the very first steps in international adoption is conducting thorough research on the countries that facilitate adoption. Each country has its own set of adoption policies, eligibility criteria, and cultural considerations. Factors such as the adoption process timeline, the age range, and special needs of children available for adoption, and the financial implications need to be taken into account. Make an informed decision by consulting with Barker.

Step 3: Select a Reputable Adoption Agency

Choosing the right adoption agency is vital to a smooth and successful international adoption journey. Barker is a Hague-accredited agency with a proven track record and experience in international adoption starting in the 1970s. We can help you explore adoption from any country you are interested in. A trustworthy agency will guide you through the process, assist with paperwork, and offer support during the emotional rollercoaster that often accompanies adoption.

Step 4: Meet Eligibility Requirements

Each country sets their own specific eligibility requirements for prospective adoptive parents. These criteria typically include age restrictions, marital status and length, number of children in the home, financial stability, and requirements surrounding criminal record. Many countries also have specific requirements related to the prospective adoptive parent's health and overall well-being. Understanding and meeting these eligibility criteria is a critical aspect of the adoption process.

Step 5: The process of gathering necessary documents begins: Barker here to provide the support and guidance you need every step of the way.

International adoption involves a considerable amount of paperwork. Prospective adoptive parents must prepare documents such as birth certificates, marriage certificates, financial statements, home studies, and adoption dossiers. Accuracy and completeness in document preparation are essential to avoid unnecessary delays in the adoption process. Once you’re ready, you can submit an application for adoption!

Step 6: Attend Adoption Training Series

All prospective adoptive parents are required to engage in training and education surrounding adoptive parenting.  While lots of things about adoptive parenting are the same as parenting through any other method, some things are different or more complex. A big part of your agency’s job is to make sure you’re well prepared for those complexities and ready and able to meet your child’s unique needs.  During Barker’s Pre-Adoption Training, also known as NTDC, you will participate in a 4-session training which aims to equip adoptive parents with the knowledge and skills needed to understand the challenges and joys of parenting an adopted child. Education helps in nurturing a supportive and loving environment for the child, ensuring their successful integration into the new family.

Step 7: Home Study and Background Checks

A home study is a comprehensive assessment of the prospective adoptive family's eligibility and preparedness for adoption. It includes interviews, home visits, and background checks to ensure a safe and nurturing environment for the child. While the process may seem daunting, it is essential for both the child's well-being and the adoptive family's preparedness. Step 8: Wait for a Match

After home study and the required home study and initial immigration steps are completed for your country program of choice, you will officially be in your waiting period!  While it’s very exciting to enter the formal waiting phase, the waiting period can also be emotionally challenging. It's essential to stay patient, open-minded and connected to your adoption community during this time.  Barker brings our waiting families together six times per year to offer free waiting parent meetings. These meetings are educational and provide support during this phase.

Finally, Travel and Placement

Once a match is found, prospective parents will typically need to travel to the child's country to meet and finalize the adoption process. This involves court appearances and other legal formalities. After the placement, the family returns home and starts the process of adjustment and bonding with their new child.

International adoption is a deeply rewarding journey that unites families across borders and cultures. Understanding the process and requirements is essential for a smooth and successful adoption experience. By researching the right country, choosing a reputable and Hague-accredited agency, like Barker, meeting eligibility criteria, and completing all necessary paperwork, prospective adoptive parents can be well-prepared for the journey ahead. With love, patience, and commitment, international adoption can bring immeasurable joy and fulfillment to both parents and their adopted children. Ready to begin your international adoption journey?
