As we celebrate Barker’s 75 years of service to the adoption community and collective legacy of building and supporting families, we are honoring three women who have had an extraordinary and transformational impact on Barker over the past three decades.
Meet Maureen Golden

Maureen has close to forty years of experience in the areas of non-profit administration, event planning, board participation, and fundraising in the fields of education, international affairs, adoption, and community service. She received her B.A. from Stanford University and her M.Ed. from the University of Virginia.
Maureen’s professional work in higher education includes posts at The Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) in Washington, DC as Director of Career Services, Director of Corporate Relations, Director of Special Projects, Liaison to the SAIS Bologna Center, and U.S. Director of the British-American Project, as well as Chair of the SAIS 50th Anniversary Celebration. Prior to that, she served as Associate Director of Career Services at The Georgetown University Law Center and as Assistant Director of Student Activities at Anne Arundel Community College.
For over twenty-five years Maureen has been involved with The Barker Adoption Foundation (previously The Barker Foundation). Her contributions as a Barker parent and volunteer include serving as President of the Board of Trustees 1997-1999, where she was asked to extend her office for an additional year during which the Board accomplished a $5 million endowment campaign goal, developed a comprehensive strategic plan and undertook the acquisition of an international adoption agency; service as a longstanding member of the Board of Trustees; co-chair of various special events including the 50th, 60th, 65th, and 70th anniversary celebrations; participation as an annual auction committee member beginning in 1990; Chair of the Families and Friends portion of the Legacy I Fund and Executive Committee member for the Legacy II Fund, which established and raised over $10 million for Barker’s Endowment; recipient of the Richard B. Barker Award in 2000 and the first Staff Appreciation Award for service to Barker; service at various times on committees including the Board’s executive committee, endowment feasibility study committee, finance, and grants committee, search committee, and strategic planning committee; as well as an art committee which created the quilt-themed photo collages that adorn Barker’s walls. Maureen and her husband Neil reside in McLean. Their son was adopted through Barker.
